Korean-mexican fusion tacos?(pictured above) Has Dylan at Eat,drink&bemerry crossed the streams or is he on to something?
TACO takes the taco lifestyle to Pomona for fish tacos.
Sarah from The Delicious Life lifts her ban on The Grove for Loteria Grill.
What's in the king taco salsa roja and verde? That's what an Angeleno living in China who misses his King Taco fix recently asked me. I told him I didn't know but that I'd put forth the question to my readers. So has anyone tried to emulate either? If you have the King Taco salsa recipes spill the beans!
Hey Bandini,
ReplyDeleteWhen are you going to review some Long Beach spots? There is a place on East 4th and Pacific in downtown Long Beach (next to the Pacific metro station) called Cinco de Mayo -- I've never tried it but I'd be interested to know if it's any good.
-dw (new to Long Beach)
Yeah I need to get to long beach. I put Long Beach on notice but I don't remember why. Long Beach here I come!!!
ReplyDeleteUnlift that ban on the grove:
ReplyDeleteIf you like Loteria Grill, why not go to Bangkok just to eat at the Natalee Thai chain location owned by a non-Thai guy.
Having the names of authentic Mexican dishes on your menu doesn't make you authentic. This place misses the mark re: nearly every welcoming element of a great LA mexican place, from the smallish tacos, to the pay-as-you-go chips and salsa. Meats are tasty, as are the mushrooms with epazote. However, if you think a trip to Mexican food wonderland requires going to a mall and spending $15-20, as is required by the non-Latin owned Loteria, you are living the small taco lifestyle indeed.
The salsa roja recipe from King Taco is guarded by an old curandera in the scariest Botanica in East LA. Seriously, that recipe is top secret but I bet the owners of El Rodeo Grill in Echo Park know it. Their salsa tastes somewhat similar or at least it used to...I stopped eating there awhile ago.
ReplyDeleteAnon is right, the Rodeo Grill had/has a pretty good copy of the King Taco red salsa, maybe some of those employees are easier to bribe for the recipe? I keep trying to taste what kind of chiles they use, but besides lots of chile arbol, I don't have a clue.
ReplyDeleteIt is "Chiles chipotles" a.k.a smoked jalapeno peppers. However, that's all I know. I'm not sure about the rest of the ingredients, but of that I'm certain. No mistaking it.

ReplyDeletePenzey's spices sells dried chile piquin in a bottle, the smell of them upon openning the bottle is exactly the smell of the KT sauce.
